Established in 2023, Sepik River Village Stay is an initiative of the villagers of Korogo Village at the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. They have built several new guesthouses which offer accommodation at the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Each of our guest houses is built in the traditional village style and made from bush materials. We offer houses in a range of locations to the intrepid traveller and adventurous tourist. Your guesthouse stands apart from the other village houses but is still in the village itself. You are a few steps from the river where you can go for a refreshing swim or relax at one of the boat piers.
Korogu Village is located in the so called Middle Sepik area. This is the heart of the unique ancient Sepik culture. In each of these villages you will find a Haus Tambaran which is a men's house. They are uniquely decorated and may contain ancient artefacts such as painted carvings and garamuts which are drums to spread messages within the village.
The rooms are very basic indeed. You get a bed or a mattress on the floor with a mosquito net and not much else. As there is no electricity in the village, there is no air-condition, no fridge, no fan, no light. You have to bring your own torch and a (solar) power bank to charge your phone. There is Digicel mobile phone reception at the river bank.
The rooms have no en-suite facilities. The toilet house is outside with a drop hole type construction made of bush materials. It is recommended to bring your own toilet roll.
In this part of the world there are no bathrooms as you know them. The people of the village come down to the river to their canoe landing pad with a bucket and a soap. There they pour the cool river water (yes, it is brown from the mud) over their head.
You will only believe this when you see it: Time has stood still here since ancient times when people traded by exchanging goods. We will visit a Barter Market where the people from the river meet the people from the mountains. Fish from the river is exchanged for fruits, vegetables and sago from inland.
Here you see sellers from inland offering their blocks of sago. They would like to exchange it for fish which was caught earlier in the morning.
Each village has a Haus Tambaran (sometimes called Haus Boy). As the name says it is for men only. They are richly decorated and hold rare carvings and artefacts inside.
The Garamut is a drum carved from a hardwood tree. It is used during ceremonial events and to call village meetings. The video was recorded at the Haus Tambaran at Korogu Village.
